Grapes of Wrath
The enduring spirit of the working class
In 2016, August expanded the vineyard by acquiring a 152-acre plot on Mount Veeder, replacing a neglected walnut orchard with 1.5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon—a grape variety for which Mount Veeder is renowned.
Naming the Mount Veeder vineyard Grapes of Wrath evokes the deeper mission of the site—not only to cultivate prestigious Cabernet Sauvignon, but also to provide affordable housing and reflect a commitment to social equity. The vineyard pays homage to the novel’s central themes: land, labor, justice and the enduring spirit of the working class—values also embodied in August’s life and work.
